The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) recently announced the installation of a new green carpet system designed to help reduce the centre’s environmental impact. The carpeting from TacFast Systems International is North America’s first expansive installation. The carpet itself features plastic floor plates with hooks that can lock into place as well as a mechanical hook-and-loop bond that attaches the carpet.

Vice President of operations for the MTCC, Vince Quattrociocchi says, “This initiative is one of many in our green strategies that emphasizes continuous improvement. Our mantra is to find ways to reduce energy and water consumption, divert waste and choose more environmentally friendly options. For our carpet replacement, we set out to make the best choice based on criteria including local procurement, minimizing toxic substances, durability, cost and disposal. Our pilot project proved this carpet system was the winner on every front.”

The MTCC is a high traffic area with the frequent changing of show equipment and the odd spill where areas of the carpeting need to be replaced. The new carpeting system is both lightweight and uses less material, allowing for a more environmentally conscience option of flooring.

The carpet has 12,000 square yards that loop back and attach to hook plates on the floor. The carpet is made from Antron which is the highest performing fibre in the country. The carpet is 70 per cent lighter which reduce the amount of material and transport needed. The carpeting accessories are both durable and strong which will last for years to come. The disposal process actually ensures the carpeting be used on another floor rather then a landfill.

“One of the benefits of modular floors is the speed of installation. Gone are the days of waiting for concrete floors to be levelled and toxic glues to dry,” said Wendy Berney, Vice President of sales and marketing of TacFast Systems International. “The flooring system can accommodate a variety of surfaces including wood, vinyl, ceramic, rolled and tile carpet. Flexibility and ease of maintenance are important considerations for busy venues like the MTCC.”
